The Diabetic Kitchen’s Miracle Miles, Walk/Run for a Cure of Diabetes, in Grand Maris
On Saturday August 10, 2013 The Diabetic Kitchen hosted it fifth event of the year, a “Miracle Miles, 3-Mile Walk/Run for a Cure of Diabetes. The theme of the day was, “Children with Diabetes”.
In addition to the Walk/Run TDK hosted a Health Fair, we had vendors with Arts & Crafts, and we gave Book Bags, School Supplies, and Diabetic Supplies to Children with Diabetes. The event was very well attended and a great time was had by all.
We’re currently in the planning stage of our next event on November 23, 2013 in New Iberia City Park and Bouligny Plaza on Main Street in New Iberia. In the City Park TDK will host another Miracle Miles Walk for a Cure of Diabetes. We will also introduce our first ever “Health Food Festival”. Vendors will be required to prepare “Heart Health Meals ONLY”.
New Iberia is located in South Central Louisiana, in the heart of what’s consider “Acadiana”. The area is flanked by Whites, Blacks, Asians, and Latino, all of whom share a respect and care for one another. In addition the ethnic make-up of the area we share a very strong and global Creole/Cajun Cuisine, that’s featured around the world.
Our goal isn’t to “Change” the Cuisine, we will simply introduce methods to convert our Cuisine to a more Heart Healthy experience.
Like many communities, and perhaps more than most, we share a love for eating, because of the nature of our cooking habits, our zest for a good meal, a good party and our laissez les bon temps rouler attitude, which means “Let The Good Time Roll,” we are seeing an increase in Adult and Juvenile Obesity along with an alarming rate of both Adult and Juvenile Diabetes. Thus the reason for the Health Healthy Food Festival.
Our aim is to bring greater awareness to Diabetes as we embark on an assault on our palates and cooking traditions. We do realize that we’re in for a fight, but it’s a battle that MUST be wedged, will you join us.
Just a quick fact: Diabetes Kill more people across America than AIDS and Breast Cancer Together! We simply can’t afford to allow this tidal wave of Obesity to continue to flow across the country without erecting barriers to end the flood.
Our commitment to you: Open more and greater for Health Eating, Promote more Exercise through Walks and Work-outs, Increase Awareness of the Problems, and Mentor those in need of help or advice any and everywhere we can offer it.
